Question & Answer: YMCA Coed Basketball

Question:

"I noticed that my team is playing Team 8. I looked at the rosters last night and saw that they don't even have people signed up. Do we actually have a game tonight? I don't want to roll up to the Y and not have a game. Let me know whats up. Also, when are shirts being handed out?"

This is a practice week so we are still getting our footing as to who is on what team, who is ACTUALLY going to show up and each team will see what holes they need to fill in and then go do it. I have found that the first week is always shaky and for as much as you plan it never goes down the way you want it to when you are just getting a league going like we are with B-Ball. Therefore ordering shirts in the first week is simply an exercise in futility and always leads to a smaller re-order which T-Shirt companies HATE! Now something like Kickball is different. It’s established, you know what to expect and people get it. Having shirts ready Day 1 is a big part of it.

With a new sport and new people, there are a ton that are doing this for the first time and are a little shaky getting their teams together. They will show up the first week and gain a handle on things and are much better at “Selling the league” to their potential teammates based on even a basic knowledge of what to expect. So to answer the question…we will wait to see how the teams shape up this week and order the T-Shirts to be ready in time for next week when we start actual game play.

The reality is that the schedule and the rosters never end up EXACTLY what we start with (in any sport of any season for that matter) so
there will definitely be a little bit of a shuffle around over the next 7 days…but we will land on our feet.

We always do

As far as tonight, I think that a couple of teams are going to be short. I am going to put it out to the league that anyone that wants to play can come out and try it out or just get a run in for that matter. As I am writing this I have had 3 registrations for Basketball…people just wait till the last minute and the truth is I will not know until tonight. Suffice to say as long as we have a basketball and a court we will play some ball!
