About a year ago, Steve "Monty" Montgomery and I sat upstairs at the Starboard and started to get to know each other. Having known and in many cases lived with what seems to be half his staff for more than a decade I finally started to get to know this Monty guy everyone was raving about. As it turns out he and I seem to have a lot in common (aside from just the raspy voice) in the way that we appraoch business and the world around us. We both want to have a positive affect on the community and we both are committed to making a living by helping people have fun and make as many friends as possible.
He and I chatted about how there is such an amazing crop of bars, owners, managers, and staff at The Beach right now. He wants to include all the bars, not just The Starboard, in creating a fun atmosphere at The Beach. Like me, he believes that this is a project that works best when we all work together to create a good thing.
He then started talking to me about summer's past and how he and his friends used to congregate on the beach of what is now Que Pasa and how they would play his game in the water. He said "We used to play with a WIFFLE® Ball Bat some floating water jugs as bases and a kickball or something..."
I thought to myself "Monty, there is no way that you were playing with a kickball and a WIFFLE® Ball Bat...hahahaha!!! But I get the picture..." Anyone who knows Monty knows about his infectious smile and he was just having a ball remembering the good ole' days and he said "We have to get this going again...It should be FREE for people to play and we can all rotate the bars we go back to like you do with your other DSL sports. We can make it a fun competition between the bars."
As a matter of fact Monty, that is EXACTLY how DSL started 3 years ago!!! The Battle of The Bars Kickball Tournament started it all and it just grew from there!
So the next thing I know he is marching me across the street to meet the fine folks at Delaware Marine who manages that property out front of Que Pasa and we started chatting about it. I started talking to the other bars and after a few months...BAM!!!
Bay Ball Is Now Back At The Beach Baby!!!
In future posts we will be talking about the rules and what it is in more detail, but for now just know that it is pretty much like WIFFLE® Ball in the water and everyone is splashing around diving under water to avoid getting pegged, looking silly trying to run from floating base to floating base and just having a great time staying cool and being silly.
I wanna thank the amazing folks at Nalu, MacShea's, Que Pasa, Bethany Blues and of course The Starboard for working together to make Summer 2010 in Dewey even more fun this summer. Those of you that know DSL best know that working together is what makes all this possible...
And that means all of you members too!!!
