Delaware Sports League

What is Delaware Sports League?

DSL-Twit-Pic-1.gif

So we originally got the idea from other cities that have similar leagues…this is just our version of it. Basically, Delaware Sports League is a way to go out, get some exercise, and hang out with other people in the league that, like you, like to go out and run around for a while and have some fun. Then afterwards go hang out at one of our sponsor bars and grab a drink.

YOU MUST BE 21 OR OVER TO BE A MEMBER OF DELAWARE SPORTS LEAGUE.

Some people call them Sports and Social Clubs. We just call it DSL. Unimaginative as it may sound (when you can’t think of a joke, self deprecating humor is always the easy way out) whatever you want to call it, it is all about having some clean healthy fun, and most importantly meeting new people.

Here's how it works

Most of the games we play are team-based.

For team-based games you will always have 3 choices:

  • Start a team and be the Captain
  • Join somebody else's team that already has created a team
  • Just sign up by yourself and we will place you on a team
(Other leagues charge more money for “Free Agents”…we just think that is silly)

All DSL sports are co-ed and social, regardless of the sport and skill level. If we have enough teams (like in Wilmington for instance) we may divide the teams up based on experience and skill level to make things fun for everyone, but regardless of where you fall in the experience/skill level spectrum it is NEVER about competition. It is about the people, the exercise, and the fun!

For games that do not require teams it is more like a pickup game, you just sign up and then show up when the games are played.

So when you have a game, you show up at the game site and play whichever sport is in season. Games are usually on week nights and you play one game a week. We NEVER have Friday games and we try to stay away from Saturday games, however we do have some Saturday games but they are few and far between and except for Wiffleball generally only used for make-up games.

After every game there is a feature bar that we go to and hang out afterwards. This is the whole point of DSL, getting to know new people and hanging out with friends. I cannot stress this enough IT’S ABOUT THE PEOPLE, NOT THE PARTY!

DSL is not a league that is dedicated to drinking on weeknights, sure...there are drink specials, but that’s just to save you money if you want to have a beverage while socializing.

DSL is about having the courage to be open to the notion that when you play a game it does not have to be that those people are your mortal enemies, hahahaha, it is just a game and those people that are not on your team could be really nice people, or a great business contact, or even a viable mate…ok so I just wanted to say “viable mate”…but let’s be honest this is a great way to meet people for whatever reason that may be.

Which leads us to…

It's all about the people!

So here is where the social aspect comes in… After the game you go out to one of our sponsor bars enjoy some specials available only to Delaware Sports League members. We’re not about getting wasted on a weeknight and skipping work the next day. We just want you to go out meet your fellow players and enjoy your discounts for being part of DSL. You might as well enjoy some Bud Light discounts while you are out at the bar, right? It’s kind of our way of saying thanks for letting us throw the party....

In Wilmington and at The Beach we have Games After The Games which are Presented by The Delaware Lottery and are FREE to active DSL Members at the feature bar after every game!

It is like our having our own traveling Trivia Game and starting in 2010 Games After the Games will include other activities, some old school games like paper football, some silly stuff like Twister…well it’s all pretty silly…but it’s also fun. You will be able to win prizes like Lottery tickets and other prizes provided by The Delaware Lottery. We have been working together to create new stuff so that it is easier for members to get to know another.

Think of it as a built in ice breaker

Who does what?

Our job is to be the Organizer. We put together the infrastructure that keeps the machine well-oiled and fun. You know take care of the legal stuff, secure the field, get the T-Shirts, provide the equipment, handle the communications, maintain the website, maintain standings, post highlights and pictures, etc...Our job is to make sure that this is fun and organized every week and to that you have the information you need when you need it.

We also see it as our responsibility to put together DSL Special Events and Outings to get everyone together off the field as well. Starting in 2010 we will be offering weekly and monthly get together’s like Cocktail Class, Mystery Wine Game, Gourmet Club, Lunch Bunch, and Brunch Bunch. We have our Annual ROXIE Awards, The Dewey Beach Scavenger Hunt, and DSL Field Day.

We do Charity Tournaments like The Best Buddies Kickball Tournament to kick off the Kickball Season every spring. Yes I made that pun on purpose. Ahhh, I entertain me…I digress…We will offer Outings like The DSL Ski Trip, or Trip to DC, Trip to Six Flags, Trip to Baltimore Inner Harbor and The National Aquarium, and whatever else we come up with. You can talk to members who have been on these trips on the various Trip Pages…you’ll see that when we do a trip…WE DO A TRIP!

The DSL Sponsor Bars provide the Food & Beverages.

All YOU have to do is bring a smile and an openness to the notion of playing just for fun and meeting new people...

We take care of the rest!

It’s a pretty simple concept, but it works out great!

Drink Responsibly

It is the policy of Delaware Sports League that all members and/or those participating in Delaware Sports League events must be 21 years of age or older.

In an effort to foster a reputation of responsible business practices we have contacted the Delaware Alcoholic Beverage and Tobacco Enforcement Office in order to comply with all regulations associated with the promotion of events involving the consumption of alcohol. It is the goal of Delaware Sports League to be an example for like organizations as a business committed to the promotion of responsible drinking practices in order to protect ourselves, our members, and our sponsors.

On behalf of DSL, our sponsors, and The Delaware Office of Highway Safety Please Do NOT Drink & Drive. It is easy to find a Designated Driver, and a Taxi is just a phone call away.

With a little planning, everyone lives to have fun another day!
